Vancouver Island is known for many things: lush, green forests, gorgeous beaches, temperate climate, and lovely cities and towns to name just a few.

When you begin exploring Vancouver Island, you will hopefully discover the quaint, eclectic charm of Chemainus. Home of the world-famous Chemainus murals.

1. Chemainus Murals.  One of the largest outdoor gallery in the world

2. Chemainus Dinner Theatre: People come from all over Canada and USA to see the productions

3. Unique Shopping Experience.

When walking the main streets of town, it’s almost like stepping back to a simpler time where stores offered goods made by local artists and craftsmen. Pottery shops, soap and candle stores, small art galleries, a bakery, cafe, and my children’s personal favourite – the candy store all line the street. Imagine walking into a store entirely devoted to all things sweet.

4. Staying at Eagle Rock Bed and Breakfast 855-333-0555 http://eaglerockbedandbreakfast.com/.  Luxury accommodations at an affordable price.  Ocean views just steps to the beach.

A classic Agatha Christie Murder Mystery

The Mousetrap opened in London 1952, and it is the longest running play in history.  In fact it is the longest running show (of any type) of the modern era. The play is also known for its twist ending, which the audience are traditionally asked not to reveal after leaving the theatre.   Who will escape Monkswell Manor? A snow storm traps curious guests, a police detective and a killer in a series of betrayals and murders. No one escapes suspicion…no one is safe…until the final moments of mystery!

Chemainus Selected as Most Entrepreneurial City in Canada

Legend has it that the first chief of the Chemainus First Nation earned his position after surviving a chest wound. Over a century later, his namesake town also suffered a near-fatal wound when its sawmill closed in 1983. At the time, the population was about 2,000, and almost 600 jobs were lost. It was devastating—homes were in foreclosure, families moved away, businesses closed. The town was dying.

Some citizens banded together and applied for a revitalization grant. They held a garbage can-painting competition, and the charming entries still line the streets today. Artists were hired to paint murals depicting the history of the area. Business people opened galleries filled with wares from local potters, sculptors and painters. Chemainus isn't simply about art; it's about turning adversity into an advantage.

Over 5,000 people now live in Chemainus. The entrepreneurial spirit is still being displayed with amazing creativity. Like the first chief, Chemainus has done more than just survive.
